ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL
JANUARY 2010

Dear Students, Families, & Staff,

Welcome back for 2010!  We hope your holidays were enjoyable with your families and friends and we are very happy to see you all back here safe and sound.
Thank you for all the warm holiday wishes, treats and thoughts.  One busy season is complete, but we now begin another one—end of the first semester, Catholic Schools Week, fundraisers, reception of special sacraments, etc.  What fun we will have!
As always, please keep this newsletter to keep up on information as well as the January calendar which is in today’s packet.
      Happy New Year to All!

Blessings,

Jane K. Smith

Vacation & Cash Giveaway
The final drawing for the 2009 Giveaway was held.  The winners are:
            Trip—Rita and Charles Bais
            $250—Margaret Baginski
            $150—Beth Grill
            $50—Barbara Blink
The winner of the “early bird” drawing for 2010 was Ronald Bracken, sold by the Gossmeyer Family.
How are ticket sales going for the 2010 Giveaway?  Each school family is required to sell at least four tickets and the first drawing is just weeks away—January 29th.  Of course, tickets can be sold at any time, but earlier purchases are easier since the buyer has more opportunities to win.
We are offering a special incentive—sell at least four tickets by Friday, January 15th, and YOUR name will be entered in a drawing for one of two $50.00 prizes.
We are a long way from earning the potential $25,000 profit for our school!  In order to meet this goal, we MUST sell all 500 tickets.  They really are not difficult to sell.  Please ask your friends and relatives.  We have flyers available in the school office that we can send home with your children upon request.  Please, please help!  The first drawing will be held on January 29th.

Pictures being taken
Academic teams (Science Fair, Geo Bee, Academic Bowl, etc.), sports teams, cheerleaders, Pep Squad, Drama Club, Spanish Club, etc. will have pictures taken for the yearbook after Mass on  Friday, January 8th.  Sport teams, cheerleaders, and Pep Squad members are to bring or wear their team uniforms for the pictures.

Pep Squad
Practice will be held on Thursday, Jan. 7th, from 3:30-4:30.  Next week practices will be on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30.  There may be games this weekend, but with the short notice, we will start cheering for games next weekend.  There will be both boys’ and girls’ basketball games to cheer for.

Pancake Breakfast
This annual breakfast will be held in our school gym on Sunday, January 31st from 8 AM until Noon.
Bring the family for this delicious breakfast with all the special trimmings!

Catholic Schools Week
January 31st is also the beginning of Catholic Schools Week.  Many activities are held during that week.  A schedule will be sent home soon.

January Tuition
January tuition payments are due by Friday, January 8th.  Late fees will be added to delinquent accounts on Friday, Jan. 15th.  Tuition payments are due on the first Friday of each month.  Please make sure to stay current with these monthly tuition payments.  We cannot pay our bills when you do not pay yours.  If you have concerns, please call Mrs. Smith.  Grades and report cards are withheld from families with outstanding bills.

National Geographic "Bee"
This "Bee" is open to students in Grades 4 through 8.  Congratulations to our classroom winners:  Micala Boyd, Ryan Schmidt, Kelsey Friis, Ryan Decker, Kyla Miller, McKenzie Bowman, Meghan Schmidt, Haley Decker, Dan Balog, and Jack DeVore.  These 10 students will compete at the school level on Wednesday, January 13th.  Students will gather in the gym at 2:00 PM to be our audience and cheer for classmates.  Our school winner will then take a written Qualifying Test to advance to the state level.  Wouldn't it be exciting to have a St. Joseph student enter the national competition in Washington, D. C.?  Please join us on January 13th if your schedule allows.

End of 2nd Quarter
The 2nd Quarter (1st Semester) ends on January 15th.  Report Cards will be available through Fast Direct on Wednesday, January 20th.  Grades and report cards are withheld from families owing funds to the school.

Cold Weather Dress
Wow, the cold weather is definitely upon us.  Students need to bring WARM coats, hats, gloves, and boots when necessary.  When boots are worn to school, shoes must be brought to change into for classroom wear.  Weather permitting, students do go outside for recess and need to be properly attired.

SPECIAL NOTICE
The Lake Central School Corporation changed its original calendar for January.  They are now off on Friday, January 15th, so there is NO BUS SERVICE on this day.  We have made arrangements for hot lunch, so lunch will be served as usual.  We will advise you of the menu when we receive information on that.

NO SCHOOL
There is no school on Monday, Jan. 18th in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
